: Pouvez-vous vous présenter?
David
Meme: Nous sommes Ward, un projet d’electronica expérimental;
basé à Brighton en Angleterre et nous avons sorti deux disques, un
45 tours sur le label Static Caravan et un album sur Loca Records.
SDEP :
Avez vous des projets parallèles ?
Richard
Williams : Je joue également dans un groupe qui s’appelle
Calavados Beam Trio, un trio instrumental. Après avoir quitté
1313, le batteur et moi même avons rejoint Zip pour former
ce groupe. On fait une sorte de post rock expérimental basé sur un
son live, ce, depuis 1996. En fait, tous nos disques sont enregistrés
dans les conditions du live. Un EP devrait sortir en Octobre prochain
sur Loca.
D.M. :
Je joue également dans un groupe qui s’appelle Meme, un projet
d’electronica mélancolique qui a sorti un disque (Loca). J’ai aussi
travaillé avec Tome pour un album sur le label Mirrordisc (‘Invisible’).
SDEP :
Comment définiriez-vous le son de Ward. Si vous faites de l’electronica,
qu’est-ce qui vous différencie de groupes comme Autechre ?
D.M. :J’aime
comment Ward extirpe la beauté de sons si étranges. Je trouve intéressant
le fait que nous n’utilisions pas uniquement des bip-bip et des sons
crées informatiquement. C’est vital pour Ward d’être enregistré en
live. La différence entre Autechre et Ward, c’est notre
humanité ; à l’écoute d’Autechre, on a parfois l’impression
qu’aucun être humain n’ a construit les morceaux.
R.W. :
Ward n’est ni aussi froid ni aussi complexe qu’Autechre. Nous
sommes plus humains, c’est vrai, plus chaud aussi, et notre son apparaît
comme un son organique naturel ; comme si la musique était enregistrée
sous l’eau , lui donnant une qualité liquide, douce. C’est ce
résultat que nous avons atteint pour « It’s not necessarily… ».
Cela dit, j’ai beaucoup de respect pour Autechre et consorts.
SDEP:
Comment avez vous choisi tous les bruits qui figurent sur l’album ?
Pensez-vous qu’ils aient un impact émotionnel important. ?
R.W. :
Rien n’était prémédité. Ce qui fait le succès de nos compositions
c’est la spontanéité que nous y avons mise. Nous avons délibérément
recherché des sons organiques, plus autour de nous que provenant de
nos claviers et de nos synthés ; ça nous plait de trouver des
sons issus du quotidien et de construire nos morceaux à partir de
ces sons.
D.M. :
Nous avons été faire un tour dehors avec un micro pour voir ce qu’on
pouvait enregistrer. Les sons les plus fous proviennent de sons quotidiens
plutôt normaux à l’origine. Je préfère mettre ses sons en recul sur
les morceaux pour mieux pouvoir les découvrir en fur et à mesure des
écoutes. La charge émotionnelle découle de la manière dont nous écrivons
les morceaux. Je ne crois pas que l’on puisse séparer l’émotion de
la musique.
R.W. :
L’émotion est impliquée dans tout ce que tu écris. Mais si tu veux
faire un portrait d’une émotion à travers un morceau, alors le résultat
est plus fortuit que prévisible.
SDEP :
Pouvez-vous expliquer le choix du titre de l’album, du logo, des titres
des chansons ?
R.W.:
Le titre de l’album nous est venu d’une engueulade avec une ex de
David, Jess. On pourrait croire un sample ou un truc mixé mais, non,
c’est vraiment ce qu’elle a dit.
D.M.:
On cherchait activement un titre et elle a sorti cette phrase littéralement.
On a toujours pas compris de quoi elle parlait d’ailleurs. Le logo
a été fait par Marcus et Raquel de Probe Designs, j’aime beaucoup
le résultat. L’espèce de lame de rasoir convient parfaitement à Ward.
R.W. :
J’ai simplement accepté le logo qui m’était soumis.
D.M. :
Richard est arrive un jour avec la majorité des titres pour les morceaux.
Je revenais de vacances au Pays de Galles (NDLR : d’où le titre
Just back from Holiday in Wales). D’autres titres ont été donnés au
moment ou nous avons écrit les morceaux.
SDEP :Comment
ça se passe en concert ?
R.W. :
J ‘appuie simplement sur des boutons
D.M. :
Je bois.
SDEP:
Qu’attendez-vous de ce premier album?
R
W.: . Faire plus de disques!
D.M.:
J’adorerais avoir des échos pour pouvoir progresser et faire plus
de musique.
SDEP:
Qu’est ce qu’on peut vous souhaiter ?
R.W.
: Pouvoir naviguer tout autour de Jupiter et avoir le temps pour le
faire.
D.M.
: Avoir des projets solos. ;-)

Meme : We are Ward and experimental electronica project
based in Brighton, in England, and we have two releases out, a 7"
Single on Static Caravan records and an album out on LOCA records.
• SDEP: Are you playing in other bands?
Richard Williams: I play in a band called Calvados Beam Trio,
an instrumental three piece. After leaving 1313, the drummer
and I got together with Zip and formed Calvados Beam Trio. This is an
instrumental band around since 1996, the music is experimental
post-rock, based around a live sound. In fact all the recordings (such
as the one on Bearos records) are recorded live. We are working on a
four track EP for LOCA records at the moment which I think is due out
in October 2002.
David: I also work in a project called MEME, which has
an album out on LOCA . Which is basically electronica melancholia. I
have also worked with Tome on an album on Mirrordisc records called
‘Invisible’
• SDEP: How would you define Ward’s sound? If you’re
doing electronica, is your difference with bands such as Autechre?
David: I like the way that Ward finds such beauty in such odd sounds.
I really like the fact that we don’t just use bleeps and computer generated
sounds. Recording live with a mike and using the sounds is vital to
Ward. I think the difference is the humanity of Ward,
Autechre can sometimes sound like no human was actually involved
in its construction.
Richard: Its not as complex and cold as Autechre, I think
its more human, warmer a more natural organic sound. I think it sometimes
sounds like it was recorded underwater, giving it a liquid, soft quality.
I really like the sound we achieved on the album, "Its not necessarily
your height it could be your feet". But I have a real respect for
Autechre et al.
• SDEP: How did you choose all the noises of the album? Do you
think they have a great emotional impact?
Richard: Nothing is premeditated. The success of many of the
compositions is due to the spontaneity of construction at the time.
We deliberately looked for organic sounds around us rather than just
relying on keyboards and synths. We are really into using found sounds
from everyday life and building the tracks from there.
David: We go out with a mike and see what we can find. Some of
the maddest sounds are actually originally quite normal everyday sounds.
I’m really into really low mixed sounds that you discover as you listen
more to the album. The emotional content is a natural result of the
way we feel when we write. I don’t think you can take the emotion out
of music.
Richard: Emotion goes into everything you write. But whether
you want to portray as a specific emotional statement in the tracks
then its more fortuitous than planned.
• SDEP:
Could you explain the choice of the title, of the logo, of each
title of each track?
Richard: The album title came from a convoluted conversation
with one of David’s ex-girlfriends. Jess. Its sounds like it has
already been sampled and cut up but in fact that’s exactly what she
said.
David: We were hunting around for a title for the album and she
literally just said it. We still don’t understand what she was talking
about though… The logo was designed by Marcus and Raquel from probe
designs, I really like the mix of low and high art that they gave in
the Ward designs so far, the cut-out logo is just really perfect for
Ward.
Richard: I just accepted it.
David: Richard came up with the majority of the titles, but I was
just back from a holiday in Wales that day. Calcium Taut Verdun, Massive
Beard and Some words Before and After were titled when we wrote them.
Richard: The majority of the tracks are lines taken from abstract
psycho-babble.
• SDEP: How do you play live, Is your sound different?
Richard: We just press buttons.
David: I just drink
• SDEP:What
do you expect from this 1st LP?
Richard: More releases.
David: I would love to get lots of good feedback and that is
very
inspiring for working on more music.
• SDEP: What would you like us to wish you for the future?
Richard: Circumnavigate my way through Jupiter (and time permitting
to)
David: To work on solo projects ;-)
