1)
Comment définissez-vous la musique de JWSM ?
Je
ne sais pas trop comment nous définir. Je crois qu’on peut
envisager notre musique comme une sorte de pop spontanée, de
pop mélodique zigzagante et tourbillonnante. Nous avons enregistré
notre disques très peu de temps après que nous en ayons
eu l’idée pour la fraîcheur et la spontanéïté.
La
contre partie de cela et qu’on peut être considéré
comme un groupe un peu bancal mais on s’en fout.
2)
Pouvez vous nous parler du nom du groupe ?
ça
ne veut rien dire. J’avais plein de morceaux enregistrés sur
cassette : au moment de les envoyer aux magazines, il fallait
un nom de groupe à mettre sur la pochette. J’étais au
téléphone avec Geert (notre batteur) et on a proposé
toutes sortes de noms. Au final, on a choisi John.Wayne.Shot.Me. Je
ne me souviens pas ce qui nous est passé par la tête
quand ce nom est sorti de nos bouches.
3)
Es-ce délibéré d’avoir mis la plus drôle
(Nintendo+me) des chansons juste avant la plus sérieuse (la
reprise de Loudon Wainwright) ?
Pas
vraiment… d’ailleurs, je trouve que les paroles de swimming pool sont
assez drôles : ses paroles me rendent joyeux.
4)Nous
connaissons assez peu de groups néerlandais en France ?
Comment l’expliquez-vous ? Avez-vous eu bonne presse chez vous ?
Ici,
nous ne connaissons pas beaucoup de groupes français non plus..(à
part en Dance…). Peut être est-ce que les Français et
les Néerlandais sont chauvins ? Certains groupes néerlandais
méritent d’être écouter comme Bauer, Zea,
Bingo Trappers, et le meilleur groupe hollandais de tous les
temps : Club Diana !
Conçernant
les groupes français, j’aime bien Paloma, et les disques
d’Herman Düne (même si je n’apprécie pas
trop l’attitude scénique qu’ils avaient lorsque je les ai vus
à Amsterdam).Ah, et j’ai beaucoup écouté, récemment,
Superflu : je ne comprends pas les paroles, mais, j’ai
trouvé ça bien.
5) Est-ce que Grandaddy est une importante influence?
J’écoute
beaucoup Grandaddy, ça a donc peut être une influence.
C’est un groupe génial avec des gens géniaux. Leur
musique est plus complexe que la notre, mais nous avons parfois des
points communs dans les paroles.
6)
D’ou vient le sample dans ‘Hollywood’ ?
Ca
vient d’un morceau de clavier que j’avais mal joué. Ce n’était
pas prévu pour ce morceau et puis cette erreur convenait bien
à hollywood.
7)
Votre futur :Allez-vous tourner ? Enregistrez-vous de nouveaux
morceaux ?Quelles sont vos attentes ?
On
adore jouer mais Geert à des obligations professionnelles et
nous autres finissons nos études : nous manquons parfois
de temps pour tourner .Ce groupe est avant tout un hobby pour
nous. Nous avons fait une petite tournée en Scandinavie et
quelques concerts par-ci par là en Europe. On s’est bien marré,
c’est donc possible que nous recommencions.
Nous
travaillons sur un nouvel album, mais j’ignore quand ça sortiera…

1)
How would you define the sound of JWSM?
I
am not sure what sound we belong to. i think our music can be described
as sloppy pop or something. melodic pop with a twist or a swirl. we
record our stuff quite fast after we have the idea to keep it fresh
and spontaneous.
the other side of this is that it might sound a little shaky sometimes,
but we don't mind even though some people don't like that.
2)
Can you explain the choice of the band's name ?
It
doesn’t mean anything. i recorded a tape full of songs in my bedroom.
when I wanted to send this tape to some magazines etc I needed a name
to put on the sleeve. i was on the phone with our drummer Geert and
we just started saying all kind of names. i the end we chose john
wayne shot me. I don’t recall what went through our minds to come
up with that.
3)
Is it deliberate that the funniest song (Nintendo+me) comes before
the most serious one, i.e. the cover of Loudon Wainwright 'swimming
pool?
Not really... actually the lyrics from 'swimming pool' sound rather
funny to me : it makes me happy.
4) We don't know much Dutch bands here in France (except the Nits)?
How
do you explain that? How did the press react to your album in The
Netherlands?
I don’t know. We don’t know so much French music here either (except
for dance music I guess). maybe both the Dutch and French are chauvinists?
some Dutch bands really deserve to be heard, like bauer, zea,
bingo trappers and Holland’s best band ever: club diana!
as
for French music I like paloma, herman dune is good
on the record, i didn’t like their live attitude when they played
in Amsterdam. oh and someone i recently listened to Superflu and
i thought that was quite good even though I couldn’t understand the
words. the press we had so far was good, so we were happy about that.
5) Do
you consider that Grandaddy is an important influence?
I listen a lot to grandaddy, so maybe it has an influence. a great
band with great people. their music is nowadays more complex than
ours I guess, but maybe we have some things in common in the lyrics
sometimes.
6) Is there any kind of reference to Sonic Youth in 'Washing Machine'
?
no there is not
7)
From where the sample in 'Hollywood' comes from?
its part of a keyboard thing i played wrong. it was a failure for
another song, but the part of it with the mistake worked nicely in
this song.
8)
Are going to tour? Are you releasing new songs? What are your expectations?
we like playing but Geert has a job and the other 3 of us are finalizing
our studies, so time is sometimes a problem. this band is just a hobby
for us. we have made some small tours in Scandinavia and single concerts
around Europe. that was fun so if its all possible I’d like to do
that more.
we are working on a new record now. I don’t know when it will be out.
